Cantor Cheryl Wunch grew up in Toronto and earned her Cantorial Ordination and master’s degree from the Hebrew Union College in 2011. She has since served congregations in the US, the UK and Canada. Before attending seminary, she worked as a Child and Youth Worker in classrooms, youth shelters, and group homes advocating for children and teens with a variety of educational, developmental, and behavioural needs. Cantor Wunch serves on the Ethics Committee of the American Conference of Cantors and is the chair of the Women in the Cantorate Taskforce, fighting for equality and high ethical standards within her field.
Currently, Cantor Wunch serves as the Sole Spiritual Leader of Congregation Shir Libeynu, which is an unaffiliated synagogue and Toronto's longest-running intentionally LGBTQ+ inclusive congregation. She is an alumna of the URJ camping system, and spent many years working at camps and with NFTY. Cantor Wunch's passion is helping people find modern meaning in our ancient texts, and reimagining ritual to suit the individual needs of her community members. She loves helping people explore their Jewish identity, and firmly believes in meeting people where they are and working together to find meaning. Whether you are just beginning your Jewish learning, looking for more in-depth understandings, or are trying to create programs and curricula to enhance the learning of others, Cantor Wunch is excited to work with you and help guide your study!
