The verse "Serve God with joy" (Psalm 100:2) reflects my approach to Judaism and the Jewish community. Whether as a congregational rabbi for 44 years, through involvement and leadership in building and rebuilding my local southern Jewish community following Hurricane Katrina, the numerous positions I have held with the national Reform movement, teaching at synagogue and university classrooms, or the many summers I have spent as a faculty member at Jewish summer camps, I have served God and derived great joy.
I look forward to sharing that joy by partnering with you in learning. For some the starting point may be reviewing the basics of Jewish life- holidays, life cycle, liturgy. For others it may be Torah, Biblical study, the variety of Jewish beliefs and values, or trying to grasp the complexity of the Jewish community, its institutions and multiple organizations.
A native of New York, where I graduated from Cornell University and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, I now live in Houston, TX with my wife, which is our base for travel and caring for grandchildren. As a retired congregational and community rabbi, I have the time and would be delighted to collaborate with you in learning.
